Kilts

Can I order a made to measure kilt?

Yes, we work closely with Scotlands most Prestigious mills to provide kilts of the highest quality. A bespoke kilt takes between three to six weeks to make. If your tartan is being woven for you allow an extra 10 weeks. Please bear in mind that your kilt will be made to your exact measurements so it's important to get them right, as bespoke items are non returnable or refundable.

What types of kilt are there?

There are 5 yard, casual kilts, and more traditional 8 yard kilts. (yards being the amount of material used to make the kilt. Kilts also come in different weights. The medium weight -13oz, and heavy weight -16oz, tend to hang best. The light weight - 10oz kilt is a good choice for a casual event or if you will be wearing it in a warmer climate.

What is the difference between Modern, Ancient and weathered tartans?

Many tartans come in modern, ancient and weathered versions. The modern colours are darker and bolder (representing modern chemical dyes). Ancient versions are slightly faded to give an older look and weathered version are even more faded - both are made to look as though they have been died with plant dyes used in the past.

What is the difference between Dress and Hunting tartans?

There are also dress and hunting versions of some tartans. Despite the names both are suitable for formal occasions. The hunting tartan is made up of natural earthy tones such as green or brown, whereas dress tartans contain more white. The dress style takes after the plaid worn by Highland women, called earasaid, which was usually white with colourful patterns.

Pleating to sett: this is the most common form of pleating, pleats are lined up vertically and horizontally to form the same overall pattern in the tartan. The result is that the kilt looks identical front and back.

Pleating to stripe: also know as military pleating, due to it's popularity with military bands. It involves selecting one of the stripes in the cloth to pleat to, as a result the front and back of the kilt look different. This is great option, though not ideal for all tartans.

What are hose, brogues, flashes, skean dhus, fly laids dirks?

hose are socks

brogues are shoes

flashes are garter flashes, for keeping you socks up!

A skean dhus is a small dagger of 3-4 inches in length. It is worn tucked into the sock.

A fly plaid is a section of pleated cloth in the same tartan as the kilt worn over the shoulder.

A dirk is a single bladed13 inch long dagger. It is often worn by officers and members of regimental bands as well as part of formal evening dress.

Whats the best way of putting together my outfit?

Start with putting on your hose (socks) and brogues (shoes)

Hose (socks) should be worn folded 4-5 cms below the kneecap. Place your garter flashes (to stop your hose falling down) on the outside of the leg with the folded sock covering the garter strap, leaving a couple of inches of the flashes showing.

Cross the laces of your brogues and pull into a knot. Twist the laces three times and tighten to create a thong. Take the laces behind the back of the ankle, return to the front and tie a bow.

Next add your shirt, followed by your kilt.

The kilt pleats should be at the back with the two flat aprons overlapping at the front. Take the leather strap on the right section of the kilt and pass strap through the hole on the left and buckle. Take the top apron pass it through the hole on the right and buckle. The kilt is worn just above the belly button and should fall on the centre of the knee. Make sure the kilt is a snug fit to keep your kilt in position.

If you are wearing a kilt belt, add it next. Pass the belt and buckle through the belt loops at the back of your kilt, if your kilt doesnt have loops then simply put the belt around your waistband and fix at the front.

Once you have put your kilt on reach you hands under the kilt and pull the shirt down as far as it will go.

Add your tie.

Add your sporran. This should be worn using a sporran chain positioned on top of the back of the kilt. The sporran should fall about 5cms below the belt buckle.

Add your waistcoat if wearning

Add your Sgian Dubh

The Sgian Dubh should be tucked into the top of the sock of the leg adjacent to the hand you write with i.e. if you are left handed you would wear it in the left hose. Only one third of the handle should show above the sock.

Add your kilt pin

The kilt pin should only be attached to the front apron of the kilt - it should be positioned two pattern squares over and up from the edge of the kilt.

Finally add your jacket and youre good to go.
