Clan MacNeil and its history

The Clan MacNeil has a deeply rooted history in the Scottish Isles and stands as a testament to the resilience and maritime prowess of its people. Coming from the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, the clan's Gaelic name, "Clann Niall," signifies their descent from Niall of the Nine Hostages, a legendary Irish king.

Known for their seafaring skills, the MacNeils were traditional maritime leaders and landowners. The clan played a significant role in the complex tapestry of Western Isles history, engaging in both trade and conflict with neighboring clans.

The clan's motto is: BUDAIDH NO BAS, meaning "Victory or Death" also translated as "Conquer or Die".

The Clan MacNeil's tartan with its predominantly green and blue hues, reflects the maritime influences and island landscapes that shaped their heritage. Despite many challenges the MacNeils have always maintained a strong sense of identity.
